Dr. Wenyu Guo is an Assistant Professor of Literacy Studies at the University of South Florida. She earned her Ph.D. in Teaching & Learning and Certificate of Graduate Study in Qualitative Research from the University of South Carolina with a focus on immigrant and transnational literacy, multicultural children’s literature, and qualitative research methodology.
Dr. Guo's research explores language and literacy practices of transnational youth of Color and their families within transnational migration contexts. Her research agenda is oriented around examining the dynamic language and literacy practices of transnational youth of Color and centering their stories and lived experiences to inform research-based advocacy in their schools, communities, and homes, fostering and sustaining their full cultural, linguistic, and literacy repertoires. Drawing upon critical theories of literacy, Asian American Studies, and decolonization theories, Dr. Guo leverages community-engaged, practitioner inquiry, and multi-sited empirical scholarship to promote anti-oppressive multi-literacies education in schools, homes, communities, and digital spaces for im/migrant and/or transnational youth and their families.
Two of her research goals are: (a) exploring how transnational youth of Color and their families engage in sociopolitical and civic learning through literacy practices (e.g., reading, writing, digital practices), (b) examining (im)migrant parents/caregivers’ family literacy and their ethnic-racial socialization.
Her scholarship has appeared in journals such as the Bilingual Research Journal, The Reading Teacher, Journal of Children’s Literature, and The International Handbook of Literacies in Families and Communities, etc. Dr. Guo is an Early Career Educator of Color Leadership Award Fellow for the National Council for Teachers of English (NCTE). She is also deeply involved in educational and literacy organizations, serving as a Research Committee member for the Literacy Research Association (LRA) and the Children’s Literature Assembly of NCTE.
Beyond her research, Dr. Guo is dedicated to working with and within BIPOC communities through community-based service initiatives. In her current project, Dr. Guo collaborated with Tampa Bay Area Asian American community and co-found a Community Literacies Lab for local (im)migrant families. This lab offers biweekly literacy workshops for community teachers, (im)migrant children, youth, and their parents/caregivers, fostering diverse language and literacy practices, providing opportunities to unpack immigrant and transnational experiences, and promoting equitable and justice-oriented literacy.
